Summary

A brief recap of how vision is affected in concussion will be provided in terms of how visual issues “beyond 20/20” can significantly affect eye teaming issues, causing problems with reading, computer tolerance, dizziness, balance issues, light sensitivity, and cognitive / memory issues overall post brain injury.

Dr. Quaid will also briefly show the prior footage of real-life patients and the effect that optometric vision therapy can have in significantly improving the quality of life of the patient post-injury. The main point of this second lecture however, it to do a deeper dive into who should see these cases (i.e. be specific when requesting second opinions on visual function and also hold the insurer to the same standard for their “IMEs” so that we are always comparing “apples to apples” in terms of opinions). Dr. Quaid will review the different types of eyecare professions briefly but will also go into what to expect in a functional visual report. This type of visual assessment is essential as it goes way beyond “can the patient simply see 20/20” on the eyechart. Common myths about vision will be dismissed and Dr. Quaid will back up his statements with peer-reviewed scientific literature. A review of sample reports will be shown and advice on what type of doctors/eyecare professionals should be used for critical high stakes functional visual assessments will be discussed along with the rationale.

This lecture is set up to follow from the prior lecture, therefore it is strongly advised to have seen the prior presentation (i.e. What is Optometric Vision Therapy and How can it help my Clients?”), for this presentation to be of maximum use.
